BOOKS
This is a list of some of the Great Books we will be reading this year in 3rd grade.

We will post the books everyweek from this list that we are using to brainstorms ideas about the books.

These Are Some Of The Great Books Your Child Can Expect to Read This Year In Our 3rd Grade Classroom.

THE ADVENTURES OF PINOCCHIO by Carlo Collodi. A wooden puppet becomes a real boy after many exciting adventures.

AMIGO by Byrd Baylor. In this story poem, Francisco decides to tame a prairie dog.

ANDY BEAR: A POLAR CUB GROWS UP AT THE ZOO by G. Johnston & J. Cutchins. This is the true story of a sickly cub who lived with his zookeeper until he could be returned to the zoo.

THE ANKLE GRABBER by Rose Impey. Is there really something under the bed? Find out as a little girl goes looking.

AUNT EATER LOVES A MYSTERY by Doug Cushman. Aunt Eater finds mysterious adventures wherever she goes.

AUNT LULU by Daniel Pinkwater. Aunt Lulu leaves Alaska and moves to New Jersey with her 14 huskies.

BE A PERFECT PERSON IN JUST THREE DAYS by Stephen Manes. Milo Crinkley tries to follow the strange instructions in a
library book.

A BEAR CALLED PADDINGTON by Michael Bond. The Browns find Paddington on a railway platform and take him home with them where he gets into all kinds of trouble.

BENJY AND THE POWER OF ZINGIES by Jean Van Leeuwen. Skinny third grader Benjy tries to build up his body by eating Zingies.

BEARS ON HEMLOCK MOUNTAIN by Alice Dagleish. Only Jonathan believed that there were bears on Hemlock Mountain.

BILLY AND BLAZE by C.W. Anderson. Billy gets the pony, Blaze, for his birthday.

BLUE MOOSE by Daniel M. Pinkwater. A talking moose drops in on Mr. Breton's restaurant and helps him by carrying chowder on his antlers.

THE BOXCAR CHILDREN by Gertrude Chandler Warner. After making their home in a boxcar, the Aldens find a grandfather.

BUMPS IN THE NIGHT by Harry Allard. Dudley the Stork holds a seance in his new, haunted house.

BUSYBUDY NORA by Johanna Hurwitz. Nora tries to meet all 200 of the people who live in her apartment house.

A CARP IN THE BATHROOM by Barbara Cohen. Leah's mother made the best gefilte fish in Brooklyn; yet, Leah had never tasted it. The fish were her friends.

THE CASE OF THE ELEVATOR DUCK by Polly Berends. When Gilbert finds a duck on the elevator in his building, he decides to find out who owns it and why they left it in the elevator.

CATWINGS by Ursula LeGuin. Four kittens with wings fly away from the dangerous city.

THE CELLAR by Ellen Howard. Fritz is always calling his sister Baby Faith, but Faith isn't a baby, and she's going to prove it by going into the scary cellar.

THE CHALK BOX KID by Clyde Robert Bulla. Gregory makes a garden that surprises everyone at his new school.

CHICKEN SUNDAY by Patricia Polacco. A story of children who want to buy a hat for the grandmother they love and the lengths they will go to work for that hat.

THE CHOCOLATE TOUCH by Patrick S. Catling. Instead of gold, everything that John Midas touches turns to chocolate.

THE CHRISTMAS CUP by Nancy Ruth Patterson. When Ann McCallie outbids everyone for the dented milkshake cup at the auction, she doesn't know how the cup will change her forever.

CUSTER by Deborah King. A beautiful horse thinks he's a cow until he meets a wild horse who shows him his roots.

DAKOTA DUGOUT by Ann Turner. A pioneer woman describes her life on the prairie in a sod house.

DOCTOR DE SOTO by William Steig. Dr. De Soto, a mouse dentist, tries to help a fox with a toothache.

FABLES by Arnold Lobel. In twenty original fables, animals from an ostrich to a crocodile seem very human.

FANNY by Stephen Cosgrove. A three-legged barnyard cat and a puppy become best friends.

FIVE TRUE DOG STORIES by Margaret Davidson. Dox, Grip, Wolf, Barry, and Balto are dogs that did amazing things.

THE FLUNKING OF JOSHUA T. BATES by Susan Shreve. Josh thinks that he will be in the third grade forever until he meets Miss
Goodwin, a very surprising teacher.

THE FORTUNE-TELLERS by Lloyd Alexander. A young carpenter's life completely changes after he visits a fortune-teller.

FRECKLE JUICE by Judy Blume. Andrew wants freckles, and he tries many strange recipes to get them.

THE GIVING TREE by Shel Silverstein. An apple tree shares everything with a boy from the time he is very young until he is very old.

HARRIET AND THE CROCODILES by M. Waddell. Harriet finds the perfect pet for her - crocodile.

THE HAUNTED HOUSE by R.A. Montgomery. A dog disappears into an abandonned house, and the reader
chooses the story's outcome. (Skylark Choose Your Own Adventure).

HERBIE JONES by Suzy Kline. For Herbie and his best friend, Raymond, third grade is never dull.

THE HOUDINI BOX by Brian Selznick. Victor receives a mysterious box from the great magician, Harry Houdini.

THE HUNDRED PENNY BOX
by Sharon Bell Mathis. The box contains a penny for each year of Aunt Dew's Life and with each
penny Aunt Dew shares a memory with her great-great nephew,
Michael.

JENNY ARCHER, AUTHOR by Ellen Conford. When her teacher asks the class to write their autobiographies, Jenny's life story has more imagination than fact in it.

THE JOSEFINA STORY QUILT by Eleanor Coerr. In 1850, Faith travels west with her family and her pet hen, Josefina.

JULY by James Stevenson. The author recalls the summers he and his brother spent at their grandparents' house at the beach.

JUMANJI by Chris Van Allsburg. Two bored children find a mysterious board game.

JUST PLAIN CAT by Nancy K. Robinson. Chris has a new cat that can't stay out of trouble.

JUSTIN AND THE BEST BISCUITS IN THE WORLD by Mildred Walters. Justin can't seem to do anything right, until he visits his
grandfather's ranch.

KAREN'S WISH by Ann M. Martin. Karen is anxiously preparing for the holidays when her grandmother becomes ill. (Babysitters Little Sister Series)

KEEP THE LIGHTS BURNING, ABBIE by Connie and Peter Roop. Abbie kept the lighthouse lamps lit during a fierce storm in
1856.

THE KID NEXT DOOR AND OTHER HEADACHES by Janice Smith. The friendship of two boys has its ups and downs, but it is
really tested when the horrid cousin of one of them visits.

THE KNEE - HIGH MAN AND OTHER TALES by Julius Lester. Here are six humorous and entertaining Afro-American folktales.

THE LEGEND OF THE BLUEBONNET by Tomie De Paolo. In this Comanche tale, a young girl sacrifices her most treasured
possession to save her people.

THE LITTLES by John Peterson. The Littles are tiny people who live within the walls of the Bigg's house and who fear mice.

THE LONG WAY TO A NEW LAND by Joan Sandin. In 1868, Carl Erik and his family left Sweden to come to America.

MADELINE'S RESCUE by Ludwig Bemelmans. A hound rescues a French schoolgirl from the Seine River.

MANY MOONS by James Thurber. Princess Lenore says she will recover from her illness only if she is given the moon.

MATTHEW WHEELOCK'S WALL by Frances Ward Weller. Made with love and pride, Matthew Wheelocks wall has its own
story to tell.

MAX MALONE AND THE GREAT CEREAL RIP-OFF by Charlotte Herman. Max Malone loved to send away for things, but he didn't like it when the things were not what they were suppose to be.

MISS RUMPHIUS by Barbara Cooney. When Alice Rumphius was a young girl, she made three promises to her grandfather.

MOLLY'S PILGRIM by Barbara Cohen. Molly must make a doll like a Pilgrim for the Thanksgiving display.

MR. PINN: THE CHOCOLATE FILES by Mary Ellise Monsell. How did the conductor of the opera disappear from the stage
in the middle of a performance? Only Mr. Pinn, penguin detective, knows.

THE MUD PONY: A TRADITIONAL SKIDI PAWNEE TALE. by Caron Cohen. A poor boy becomes a powerful leader when his mud pony comes to life.


 



MUGGIE MAGGIE by Beverly Cleary. Third grader Maggie Schultz refuses to learn cursive writing.

MY FATHER'S DRAGON by Ruth Stiles Gannett. Elmer Elevator travels to the Wild Island to rescue a baby dragon.

THE MYSTERY OF PONY HOLLOW by Lynn Hall. Is there a ghost horse in Pony Hollow? Sarah decides to find out.

THE NEW BOBBSEY TWINS #1: SECRET OF JUNGLE PARK by Laura Lee Hope. The New Bobbsey Twins investigate a series of "accidents" that could close Jungle Park.

THE NEW KID OF THE BLOCK by Jack Prelutsky. A collection of over 100 humorous poems to enjoy again and again.

OLIVER, CLARENCE AND VIOLET by James Stevenson. Oliver Beaver builds a boat to sail around the world all by himself. When Vince the frog starts selling tickets for the ride, its one mishap after another.

PECOS BILL by Steven Kellogg. Here are some of the legends of Pecos Bill.

THE PHILHARMONIC GETS DRESSED by Karla Kuskin. One hundred five people are getting ready to go to work on a Friday night. Learn how they dress and where they go.

PIPPI LONGSTOCKING by Astrid Lindgren. Pippi lives in a little house at the edge of the village.

RAMONA QUIMBY, AGE 8 by Beverly Cleary. Third grader, Ramona, rides the school bus alone and helps around the house while her mother works and her father goes to college.

TEAMMATES by Peter Golenbock. For Jackie Robinson, the first black player in the Major Leagues, it often seemed as if the crowd and his teammates would never accept him.

THE TENTH GOOD THING ABOUT BARNEY by Judith Viorst. After the death of his cat, a young boy thinks of nine good things to say at this funeral. Later, his father helps him remember a tenth

THE TITANIC LOST...AND FOUND by Judy Donnelly. It took many years to find this ship on the ocean floor.

TURTLE IN JULY by Marilyn Singer. Enjoy a poetic encounter with various creatures throughout the year.

THE UGLY DUCKLING by retold and illustrated by Troy Howell. A young cygnet is laughed at for being so ugly.

THE VELVETEEN RABBIT by Margery Williams. A toy rabbit becomes real with the help of the boy who loves him.

WAGON WHEELS by BARBARA BRENNER. A black family struggles to survive in Kansas in the 1870's.

WINNIE-THE-POOH by A.A. Milne. Winnie-the-pooh is a silly, old bear who meets Heffalumps and goes hunting for woozles and has parties with his companions.

WRITE ON, ROSY! by Shella Greenwald. Rosy decides to become an investigative reporter.

ZUCCHINI by Barbara Dana. A young ferret escapes from the zoo and is helped by a young boy.
